The Arkansas wheat checkoff program was established by Act 283 of the 1985 Arkansas General Assembly. The checkoff of .5 cents per bushel was approved by a referendum of producers, and collections began November 1, 1985. In 1995, the checkoff was increased to 1cent per bushel by Act 107 of 1995. The checkoff on all wheat grown in Arkansas for market is collected at the first point of sale. The funds are used mostly to maintain a program of research through the University of Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station and Cooperative Extension Service and to support domestic and export promotion programs through memberships in national wheat promotion organizations. A small portion is used for other programs designed to enhance the Arkansas wheat industry.
